Osteoporosis and the gut. They
may not seem be connected conditions beyond the fact that they both take place in the
body. Osteoporosis’ effect is often seen in bone health deterioration. Gut issues’ effect is often seen in problems
with digestion. Researchers today
are discovering links between gut health and
osteoporosis’ effect on bone health. Minster Chiropractic Center helps Minster
chiropractic patients experiencing both issues!
OSTEOPOROSIS AND THE GUT HEALTH CONNECTION
Minster osteoporosis is quite
prevalent. Gut issues are, too. Gut health modification
via the use of probiotics has grown to be more commonplace
in recent years to help chronic diseases like autoimmune
and cardiovascular diseases as well as cancer and diabetes. Today,
researchers are turning to the health of the gut microbiome to
address bone mass regulation which influences
osteoporosis and osteopenia. (1) Senile osteoporosis is linked
to a decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and altered
microbiota. How these are associated in postmenopausal
osteoporosis is yet unknown. A study that tried
to sort this out did discover that there was reduced
bacterial richness and diversity in postmenopausal osteoporosis with significant
difference in levels of phyla and genera in gut
microbiota. (2) Minster Chiropractic Center finds
these new discoveries linking gut health and
osteoporosis useful in guiding Minster
osteoporosis treatment planning.
DIETARY HELP FOR OSTEOPOROSIS
Minster chiropractic care of osteoporosis is multifaceted
incorporating spinal manipulation via the
gentle Cox® Technic protocols, exercise, and nutrition. Framing
osteoporosis as a condition likely involving the microbiota
of the gut, researchers are now using dietary approaches to deal
with osteoporosis. Nutritionally, a chondroitin sulfate/calcium complex
enhanced the BMD and microstructure of the osteoporotic femur bone in a rat study. It also modified
levels of the serum bone markers. This
dietary intervention of chondroitin and calcium has the potential
to ease osteoporosis and related
symptoms. (3) Minster Chiropractic Center is well versed in
the effects of chondroitin sulfate for disc health and is excited
that it may also be beneficial
for osteoporosis.
